"Organised trance, unlimited musical space in a small club room, free improvisation subjected to strict rules which is the path many jazz musicians follow nowadays. To run away from it or to go along with it? This is the question most definitely asked by any leader who starts playing with a new band, who starts playing new material, which - if it passes the acid test - can be materialised on a new record.
"The new Wojciech Staroniewicz's quartet is an attempt to combine these opposites, an attempt to organise them with young musicians whose play represents a clash between firmness and gentleness, order and chaos, energy and calm, not necessarily in separation from each other.
"There is definitely more space in this music than there was in Staroniewicz's previous project. The pieces are not so precisely organised, parts played by individual musicians do not mesh so closely as before. There is a breath, a moment to look beyond the hermetic world of music, even if we think we sit tightly enclosed in it.

"I would like to present you with my latest album - yet another testament of my artistic endeavours. Years ago, at the beginning of what I wished to be a very long and fruitful career as a pianist, I have set a serious aim for myself. Every album that was to be signified by my own name was to spring out of a different style, was to draw from different jazz idioms and yet remain truly "mine" - determined by my sensitivity, imagination and, as Mr Robert Buczek has recently said, "..relayed in the language of Herdzin..". 11 years have passed since I have released my first album and I believe I can truly congratulate myself on being loyal to that principle.
I have always been extremely lucky in securing the talent of excellent musicians while recording my albums. Their virtuosity and musicality have greatly influenced my playing and have inspired me immensely. I have based the pure hard bop sound of Chopin on the erudition of Maciek Sikała and Piotr Wojtasik, as well as the stylistic faithfulness of Jacek Niedziela and Marcin Jahr. My own compositions on the quintet based album Being Confused were brought to life by Zbyszek Namysłowski and Grzegorz Nagórski. On Seriale, Seriale I have managed to obtain a very lyrical, "Slavic" musical effect while attempting to render the sound of the Bill Evans Trio with strings. This was only possible through the lyrical and incredibly flexible imagination of Piotr Biskupski and Mariusz Bogdanowicz. Almost After was an attempt to recreate the ECM sound. The creative talents of Adam Cegielski and Czarek Konrad were essential here. Finally, while recording the electric fusion album Dancing Flowers I was overjoyed to be able to perform alongside such greats as Michał Kulenty, Michał Dąbrówka, Marek Napiórkowski, Filip Sojka and Marek Podkowa.
A while ago, to my great satisfaction and joy, I have finally managed to find my "dream team". Zbigniew Wegehaupt and Cezary Konrad have proved to be the missing pieces of the trio I have always strived for. We have been playing together for three years now, providing each other with happiness and satisfaction, whilst allowing ourselves to "re-charge our batteries", There is an unspoken understanding between us, an intuitive impulse that allows us to develop music in a direction that is surprising and pleasing to both the audience, and the three of us, without any prior rehearsals or agreements. The ability to listen to one another, virtuosity, humor, proficiency in many styles and techniques (which is partly derived from the classical training we have all undergone), as well as a slight touch of madness are just some characteristics of my colleagues. This in my opinion makes each of our concerts an unforgettable event."

"In his decision
to go for the double bass, Lemańczyk followed the voice
of his soul. You can hear it in each and every note of "Follow
the Soul". His performance is characterised by a strong
and resolute attack on the string, a deep and full tone,
precision of articulation, melodic invention [...]. There
is something more, however, that Lemańczyk can do - both
as a musician and a composer - he can stigmatise the music
with his personality, create an atmosphere and sound, which
makes you want to listen to the piece once again."
Krzysztof Kuczkowski - "Gitara i bas"
5/2003 (65)
"Despite
the fact that it is the bassist that is the author of the
album, he remains in the background, limiting his activity
to playing the role of the band's backbone. His double bass
has a wonderfully succulent sound, resolutely punctuates
whatever their colleagues are doing, ensuring that all the
blank spaces are filled. Lemańczyk's fascination with the
acoustic instrument started a relatively short time ago.
Before that his soul had been sold to the bass guitar, which
adds even more to the admiration at what he has achieved
so far."
Jarosław Kurek - "Kuryer Sopocki" 11 July
2003
Sławek Jaskułke
"Sławek Jaskułke Trio"
Sławomir Jaskułke - piano
Piotr Lemańczyk - bass
Tomasz Sowiński - drums
Maciej Sikała - tenor sax
The record is a registration of an excellent
concert that took place at the Gdynia Summer Jazz Days 2001.
It is also a debut of Sławek Jaskułke as the band leader and
the author of the music project. Maciej Sikała, the guest
of the concert, gives Sławek his ample support in two pieces.
A portion of very interesting, dynamic play, open to the unpredictable,
supported with the musicians' performative freedom and the
leader's youthful enthusiasm.
"...This young, talented artist undoubtedly
brings a gust of his own originality in the Polish pianism.
It's been a long time since someone was so consequent in overthrowing
the existing pianistic, constructive patterns and sonoristic
standards while still employing, let's face it, the quite
traditional means: dense accordics, speeding motorics at times
bordering on untamed sound aggression on the one hand and
the noticeable dose of lyricism on the other.
Andrzej Winiszewski - Jazz Forum nr 1-2/2002
"...After the departure of Krzysztof Herdzin,
his place at the piano in the Zbigniew Namysłowski Quartet
was taken over by Sławomir Jaskułke, who has accompanied the
leader in his foreign travels for many months. This is how
Zbyszek himself describes how this change has affected the
band's sound: "The arrival of Sławek has transformed the band's
profile into a much modern one, just as it is always the case
that youth brings in a fresh breeze and new elements. Our
music has now much more freedom of harmony, more freedom in
opening the form, there are no hard and fast rules for sticking
to the arrangement. As well as playing quite a lot of new
stuff, we still play some of my older compositions, though
we play them now in a completely different way. Our repertoire
is rather ample. Each of the musicians has a thick book containing
about 80 pieces. The themes we pick depend on out mood, the
audience and the circumstances of the concert."
Jazz Forum Nr 4-5/2002
"...The second part was kicked off by a performance
of Sławomir Jaskułke, a pianist from Gdańsk. Since his performance
at Gdynia Summer Jazz Days earlier this year, he has been
my black horse of Polish jazz pianism. His trio is further
made up of Piotr Lemańczyk - b and Tomasz Sowiński - dr, ergo
Maciej Sikała section. Jaskułke rules and divides there, constructs
improvisations in an interesting manner and also shows off
his own, very skilful compositions. Definitely the strongest
point of the festival!..."
Przemek Psikuta - Jazz Forum Nr 10-11/2001
"...Everyone is already talking
about the pianist Sławomir Jaskułke. His performance was one
of the brightest items during the tour concert at the Witkacy
Theatre in Zakopane. Together with Andrzej Cudzich (b) and Jacek
Kochan (dr) they carried out a fascinating deconstruction of
the 'Softly' theme, bravely going beyond the well established
ways of playing standards..."
Paweł Brodowski - Jazz Forum Nr 10-11/2001
Wojciech Staroniewicz
"Karambola"
THE BAND:
Wojciech Staroniewicz - tenor and soprano saxophones
Robert Majewski - trumpet, flugelhorn
Grzegorz Nagórski - trombone
Cezary Paciorek - piano
Olgierd Walicki - bass
Cezary Konrad - drums
Nippy Noya - congas and miscellaneous percussions
The premiere concert at the Sopot Molo Jazz Festival received
vivid reception of the public, which was subsequently reflected
in enthusiastic reviews:
"Trying to describe this extraordinary musical
event I am left with no option but to capitulate. I was literally
staring with my mouth open and listening, absorbing, absorbing
the music and drowning in delight. Oh, man! If this carambolic
concert is ever to be repeated, do take the risk and spend your
last ten zloty (or even more, if jazz is to be subject to inflation)
to see it, simply because it is worth it."
Stanisław Danielewicz "Jazzi Magazine" 28/1998
"Already the first piece amazed me with the diabolic
rhythmic divisions, executed with freedom full of disinvolture.
The next thing that followed was, like in Hitchcock, only crescendo..."
Roman Kowal "Jazz Forum" 9/1998
"Music played by Staroniewicz represents
the healthy contemporary jazz, firmly anchored partly in Coltrane
and partly in the finest traditions of The Messengers, without
a doubt belonging to the Tricity school, which school for years
now has been arousing admiration and awe among the members of
our society. It is the same school which is associated most
of all with Leszek Możdżer's sextet, a school which has grown
substantially to place into its orbit many musicians originating
from other parts of the world. This school should not however
be viewed as just another schism, but as one being founded on
universal jazz values. The only thing it rejects a priori is
any kind of routine..".
Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski.
Jazz Forum readers have regarded this concert as one of the
greatest jazz events of the year 1998.
The audience applauded over "Karambola" during Gdynia Summer
Jazz Days '99. That night also featured Kenny Garret, Chick
Corea and Gary Burton. The concert "Karambola" opened the
Jazz Jamboree '99 festival.
Some excellent musicians participate in the "Karambola" project.
Wojtek has been working with them for several years now. They
are: Cezary Paciorek - piano, Olgierd Walicki - double bass,
Cezary Konrad - drums. Wojtek has also invited some special
guests to participate in the project, namely Robert Majewski
- trumpet and Grzegorz Nagórski - trombone. But that's not
all. The drums are played by Nippy Noya, an Indonesian musician
who has played together with Stan Getz, John McLaughlin and
Astrud Gilberto.
"Hand-made"
Wojciech Staroniewicz - saxophones
Cezary Paciorek - accordion
Maciej Grzywacz - guitar
Piotr Lemańczyk - bass
Tomasz Sowiński - drums
The latest music project of Wojtek Staroniewicz. This time
Wojtek has invited exclusively Tricity musicians. "This is
very important because thanks to the frequent meetings we
can really get some realy creative work done in the rehearsals
achieving our own, characteristic sound. Besides, we are really
good friends and we truly enjoy playing together. And you
can hear all this in the music," says Wojtek. The band plays
acoustic jazz performed with a set of instruments untypical
of this genre. The combination of the sax, accordion and guitar
is quite surprising yet interesting. The repertoire is made
up of their own pieces although a large number of standards
is present as well as spontaneous improvisation. The music
is based on the contemporary grooves even though they play
without samples and a DJ.

"What we have here is a completely modern masterpiece rather
than a recording that could have been done 10-20 years ago,
which is the norm in the Polish jazz, but has been done now
due to the pure delay of our community with respect to New
York or London."
Tomasz Rozwadowski - Dziennik Bałtycki
"- meanwhile Staroniewicz together with Paciorek, Grzywacz,
Lemańczyk and Sowiński has made an exquisite record. Unquestionably
the best record in his career, full of ideas, energy, mood
alterations; one that derives inspiration from both tradition
and the present day of jazz."
Jarosław Kurek - Kuryer
Sopocki
"His quintet plays music which is a mixture of technical
proficiency straight from the 1980s and the singing of Komeda
supported by the sound of the accordion. The result is rather
interesting especially since the compositions further emphasise
the capacities of the individual musicians. The saxophone
played by Staroniewicz gives off his own characteristic tone
associated with the 1960s, which corresponds in an interesting
manner with the selected stylistics."
Grzegorz Mucha - Diapazon
"...The compositions in themselves determine
the mood of the album and the impressions perceived. They
sound very modern as well as being quite nice to listen to.
They are not 'oversophisticated'. These positive impressions
are further enhanced by very interesting arrangements and
original sound achieved by the band."
"...Wojciech Staroniwicz's performance of both the themes
and the solo parts gives an impression of high maturity. You
will not find 'fireworks' and self-intoxication with his own
technique. What you will find here, however, is a masterly
building up of the mood and a perfect phrasing. This is a
very gallant, intellectual performance."

"One must admit that the band has many assets,
one of them being the very band leader's class, who freely
moves around the various areas of jazz. While approaching
the jazz standards with commitment and temperament, he manages
to bring out all the shades and nuances contained in such
pieces of his own authorship as "The Screwdriver Dance" or
"Next Door".
Monika Malessa-Drohomirecka - Kuryer

"Yet another album with pieces written and performed
by Wojciech Staroniewicz, with the first one being "Karambola",
and another fascinating jazz set. Right from the beginning
to the end, a collection of intriguing compositions and well-thought-out
arrangements with a tinge of the musical madness outstandingly
performed."
Krzysztof Kuczkowski - Gitara i Bas
+ Bębny, 1/2003
- a clear, distinct and surprising acoustic jazz and a rather
untypical set of instruments. Most of the music were their
own compositions, though there were also standards and quite
a lot of improvisation. This seems to be the strongest asset
of Hand-made."
